Aside from anniversaries, there is no month more special for lovers than February. Valentine’s Day is the day of chocolates, Valentine’s cards, sweet “I Love You’s” and of course, flowers. Red roses are traditional and are a well-loved symbol of this day, but how about sending your loved ones some orchids for a change?
If you are not so sure that this is a good idea, let me convince you with some fun facts and tips on what you can do with orchids during this season of hearts:
- Orchids symbolize exotic and rare beauty. If you couple them with a Valentine’s Day card saying exactly that, you will surely melt your partner’s heart.
- One of the most long lasting flowers in terms of life and its blooms are orchids. Instead of giving just flowers, why not give an orchid plant? Its romantic elegance can last for years when cared for properly. And its flowers can last for months at a time. Just think, a few years from now, every time you and your partner see the orchid plant, you’ll remember Valentine’s Day. Everyday would be like the day of love.
- Orchids are second to roses as flowers that are mostly given on Valentine’s Day. So if you are thinking that it’s quite unusual to give orchids as a Valentine, then you’re somewhat wrong. Choose mini orchids and place them in a tiny red pot, or even be creative and use a decorative tea cup. This would be a sweet beginning or end to a lovely candle lit dinner.
- If you wish to stick with red flowers, then you can’t go wrong with red orchids, check out mini cattleyas that have bright red petals. Their small and cute flowers will charm anyone who sees them. If you’re planning to go big, then get red miltonias or pansy orchids. If you get a miltonia plant, then expect them to be blooming for 6-10 weeks. Beat that for showing how much you love your partner.
- If you’re planning to go sweet and simple, then I suggest you go with a single stem of mini-orchids and a card with a hand written, “I love you” in it. A sincere flower like an orchid would be the perfect partner with a sincere “I love you”.
This Valentine’s Day surprise your loved ones with orchids. This is yet another opportunity for orchid lovers to use these most exotic plants in an occasion that spells LOVE. Cupid will certainly give anyone who’s thinking of giving orchids this Valentines a go signal. I know I will.

Thanks for your email today and fun post, Mary Ann. I’m partial to the mini red catts for a day like this. Add in a nice greeting card and you’re all set! – Jon
You’re welcome. Yes, that is a good choice. 🙂 I hope you had a nice holiday.
Fun article…and I wasn’t aware that orchids were only 2nd to roses as a gift on Valentine’s.
Funny, I already received my orchid V-day gift. My hubby and I have been together for so long, that we sometimes don’t wait for a holiday to give to each other. I saw these beautiful burgundy phals at the supermarket the other day and had to have them. I told hubby he’s getting them for me as an early V-day gift. 🙂
That’s great! 🙂 That’s definitely the way to do it. I hope your phal is thriving! – Mary Ann
OUR 52ND ANNIVERSARY IS THIS MONTH –SO I WILL HINT FOR AN CATTLEYA ORCHID TO MY HUSBAND….LIFE GOES BY TO FAST.
