Repotting orchids is basically a piece of cake if you have got enough experience under your belt. But this is not the case when you are repotting not just an ordinary orchid but the largest of its kind on earth. Here’s a great example of repotting a tiger orchid.

The Grammatophyllum speciosum, also known as the tiger orchid is said to be the largest orchid in the world. The plant does not only boast its huge cluster of leaves than can weigh up to a ton or more, it also has its flowers to boot. Its yellow colored flowers with dark red spots got it the name the “tiger orchid”, which can grow up to 13 inches in diameter.

Although the orchid itself can only produce flowers every two to four years, they are plentiful and last long. It can produce up to 80 flowers at once and can remain in bloom for up to two months. It usually blooms during fall to summer.  One plant was once shown in an exhibition to have been weighing more than two tons. This was on an exhibition at the Crystal Palace in London.

This plant can be found on only a few places in the world since cultivating it in your own gardens is not an easy task. Countries like Borneo, Bismarck Islands, Indonesia, Java, Malaysia, Moluccas, New Guinea, Philippines, Sulawesi, and Sumatra are the natural habitats of these orchids. They mostly prosper on tropical places when the light is plenty and the soil is lush. They are very difficult to take care of because they need specific light requirements that most orchids do not have. They can live for many years like most orchids do.

The tiger orchid is one amazing species of orchid to be proud of. Consider yourself lucky if you find something like this near your neighborhood. They are unique and only a few of them are cultivated outside of Asia. This orchid is simply great in both size and beauty.
