Orchids are mostly loved because they have incredibly amazing-looking flowers. Their uniqueness, in fact, may be their most loved quality. They come in almost every color and shape. I recently I came across an orchid which again showed me that orchids are simply one plant species which produce one of the most beautiful flowers in the world.

The orchid type I am talking about is the Curled Odontoglossum or also known as Odontoglossum Crispum.

The fact is this orchid is considered by many orchid growers and aficionados as the most beautiful orchid there is. Its flowers are simply stunning in color and shape. But get this, most orchid growers also say that this orchid is one of the most difficult ones to grow.

This type of orchid blooms in winter with about 8 to twenty blooms per plant each growing up to twenty inches long. The flowers may vary from plain white to pale rose in color. Sometimes reddish brown spots appear all over the flower, which adds to its beauty. Its beauty can be best seen when the flowers come out in plain crisp white color with yellow lips and a few red marks beneath it. The petals usually form a star-shaped flower that frames its pretty lips.

These orchids are considered to be epiphytic from the genus Odontoglossum. They naturally grow in the montane forest of Columbia at very high elevations of 2,000 to 3,000 meters.

If you decide to grow them at home, find a place for them where there is moderate sunlight and preferably cooler conditions. You can use medium fir bark to pot them. Remember to water them just when you think the potting mix is just too dry.

They grow best in places where there the temperature is a bit cooler during the days. High day time temperature will result in wilted and dried up plants. If you find yourself in conditions like this, it is best grow them in rooms where there is proper air conditioning.
